France - Canal du Midi - part 3

The sculpture on the right is a little difficult to recognise due to its deterioration but it has a significant story attached to it. It is Princess Carcas. When Charlemagne lifted the seige on her town she called for the bells to be rung. The people cried ' Carcas rings' ie 'Carcas sonne', so the town became Carcassonne! The sculpture once stood in front of the Porte Narbonnaise main gate but has been moved here and a replica put in its place.
